The Democrat picked up new donors, and one particular clip from the match lit up social media.

Gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist‘s strong performance during Monday’s live debate with Gov. Ron DeSantis is already giving signs of revitalizing the Florida Democrat’s campaign.

According to the former state governor, after the fiery, no-holds-barred match, his campaign raised $200,000 from almost 7,000 donors, with debate clips making a favorable impression on social media.

Crist and the Republican incumbent faced off in their only live, televised debate, which aired from the Sunrise Theater in Fort Pierce.

Pressure Points

During the debate, Crist called out DeSantis for his stance on abortion and a woman’s right to choose and accused him of making Florida the most unaffordable state in the nation.

“Property insurance, under you, has doubled in the state of Florida. Doubled,” Crist said, lambasting DeSantis for taking his “eye off the ball” as he campaigns out of state.

He also pressured DeSantis to answer a question that, so far, has remained unanswered: whether he would stay in office if re-elected, as it is believed that DeSantis is poised to make a run for president in 2024.

“You’re running for governor. I have a question for you: If you’re running for governor, why don’t you look in the eyes of the people of the state of Florida and say to them that if you’re re-elected, you will serve a full four-year term as governor,” Crist questioned DeSantis, who said something inaudible in response. Still, Crist pressed on.

“It’s not a tough question; it’s a fair question. But he won’t answer it,” Crist pointed out as DeSantis visibly cringed. When the question was asked later during the debate, and DeSantis once again declined to answer, the audience exploded in laughter.

A Clear Winner

That particular clip is taking the lion’s share of attention, and it’s to be seen if it will continue to result in more fundraising for Crist, whose campaign reported just under $773,000 in funds, while DeSantis’ official candidate account holds $8.8 million in cash on hand as of Oct. 14.

But campaign funds aside, an online poll taken by Tampa’s WFLA station, one of the debate’s local broadcasters, shows that 68% of viewers believe that Crist resoundingly won the debate.

“Charlie Crist delivered a game-changing debate performance,” said Crist campaign manager Sydney Throop.

Mail-in voting already started and early voting kick off this week in many parts of the state. Election Day is Nov. 8.
