Tampa’s annual Mardi Gras-style festival was inspired by the local legend of the pirate José Gaspar, also known as Gasparilla.

Get out your beads and finest swashbuckling attire as the annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest returns on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Sponsored by Seminole Hotel Hard Rock & Casino, Tampa’s Mardi Gras-style event dates back to 1904 and is inspired by the local legend of the pirate José Gaspar, also known as Gasparilla. According to lore, Gaspar was a fearsome pirate who roamed the waters off Florida’s Gulf Coast during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Event Schedule:

  • Gasparilla Invasion Brunch: Kick off the festivities from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Tampa Convention Center. Enjoy brunch and cocktails while watching the legendary Jose Gasparilla ship sail up Seddon Channel, accompanied by a flotilla of vessels. Tickets are limited and can be purchased in advance.
  • Gasparilla Invasion: From 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Jose Gasparilla, teeming with Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla pirates, will make its grand entrance into the Tampa Convention Center basin. The spectacle culminates at 1:00 P.M. when the Captain meets the Mayor to demand the key to the city.
Gasparilla Parade of Pirates: Following the city’s “surrender,” join the jubilant procession from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. as pirates and parade-goers march along a 4.5-mile route down Bayshore Boulevard, celebrating their conquest.
