Progressive Turnout Project: ‘Florida is still very much a swing state’

The voting organization has sent handwritten postcards to nearly 2 million voters in Florida.

If you’re feeling election anxiety and want to put that energy to work, the Progressive Turnout Project has a long list of volunteer opportunities—from phone banking in your county to becoming a greeter at the polls.

The Progressive Turnout Project is the largest voter contact organization in the country, specifically dedicated to mobilizing the Democratic Party and defending democracy, its site states.

While the organization is nationwide, it’s made some impressive effort to get out the vote in Florida, including:

  • 1,965,950 handwritten postcards going to inconsistent Democratic voters across the state. These are proven to boost Democratic turnout about 1 percent.
  • Placing Campaign Fellows on the FL-13 (Whitney Fox) and FL-27 (Lucia Baez-Geller) campaigns to help boost their field efforts. Campaign Fellows receive training from PTP and then spend the rest of their time doing direct voter contact for their campaigns.
  • The organization’s 501(c)3 Turnout Education Fund has sent 374 engagement kits to barber shops and beauty salons across the state to encourage them to talk with their clients about voting as part of our Shape Up The Vote campaign

“While recent elections may not have gone our way, Florida is still very much a swing state,” Alex Morgan, president of Progressive Turnout Project, said. “Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis eeked their way into office in 2018, and the result has been a disaster for Floridians. Now people are left fighting for some of their most fundamental rights at the ballot box. Every door we knock, every postcard we write, every conversation we have will make a difference and help put Florida on the road to recovery. We must rally Democrats to vote in 2024 and beyond.”
