“I don’t think they should be serving in the United States Senate,” Rep. Joaquín Castro said.
Rep. Joaquín Castro (D-Texas) isn’t holding back when it comes to calling out President Donald Trump, his supporters, and those in office who sought to overthrow the 2020 presidential election results.
On Jan. 6, while rioters stormed Capitol Hill, Rep. Castro condemned Trump for inciting violence and said that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) should resign for objecting to the Electoral College results. In total, there were eight senators and 139 representatives who voted to sustain one or both objections, according to The New York Times.
“@tedcruz should resign from the United States Senate immediately,” Rep. Castro tweeted.

During an Instagram live chat, Rep. Castro and his brother, former presidential candidate Julián Castro, discussed the incendiary remarks by Trump during the rally before right-wing rioters raided Capitol Hill and said Sen. Cruz was just as complicit.
“He has been spectacularly irresponsible,” Julián said. “[He’s] an embarrassment to the state of Texas.”
Rep. Castro added later—after Vice President Mike Pence certified the election results and declared Joe Biden the president of the United States—that he was adamant on Sen. Cruz and Sen. Hawley’s resignation. Sen. Hawley was photographed praising the rioters as they stormed into the Capitol. He also launched a fundraiser for the rioters.
“I don’t think they should be serving in the United States Senate,” Rep. Castro said. “Both those guys should not be representing Texas or Missouri. They have acted irresponsibly, dangerously, shamelessly. They know they are lying about widespread voter fraud.”
Rep. Castro said he also agreed that Trump should be impeached. And he’s not the only one calling for Sen. Cruz’s resignation for his involvement in stoking untruths about the election and leading a group of Republican lawmakers to overthrow the election.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa, and the Texas Democrats as a whole also agreed that Sen. Cruz should leave his post.
“Today is a shock, but not a surprise,” Hinojosa said in a press release. “In the weeks since Ted Cruz declared his intentions, many have warned of the devastating harm that deceitful rhetoric can and will have. Nevertheless, Ted Cruz acted in bad faith by leveraging fringe theories and blatant disinformation to challenge the legitimacy of the 2020 election results and position himself in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.”
He added, “Cruz’s actions have undermined our democracy, inspired treasonous, seditious acts, and brought shame to Texas. The tragic results of his actions will reverberate for generations. By leading the objection to the Electoral College certification, all the while knowing the devastating consequences, he has demonstrated he is not fit to serve in the US Senate.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) stated similarly that Sen. Cruz must go.
“Sen. Cruz, you must accept responsibility for how your craven, self-serving actions contributed to the deaths of four people yesterday. And how you fundraised off this riot. Both you and Senator Hawley must resign. If you do not, the Senate should move for your expulsion.”
Sen. Cruz responded to her tweet by calling her a liar and added that he “wasn’t going anywhere.”
