Florida Democrats Reintroduce Bill to Make Diapers Permanently Tax Free in the State

In the bill’s new version, Sen. Lauren Book proposes making the diapers tax relief permanent and include other childcare items as well as feminine hygiene and incontinence products. 

The relief Florida parents are getting from buying diapers tax-free is set to end in June 2023.

Democratic Sen. Lauren Book (D-Davie) and Rep. Anna V. Eskamani already introduced the legislation for the March legislative session.

Book has supported different versions of the bill since she was elected in 2016. In 2022, she was joined by Eskamani to renew it and push it again in last year’s legislative session.

That bill didn’t go through, but the provision for diapers was included in the final budget for 2023. 

When announcing the reintroduction of the bill on Jan. 4, Book said that state lawmakers could do more to help families.

In the bill’s new version, Book proposes making the diapers tax relief permanent and include other childcare items as well as feminine hygiene and incontinence products, which were excluded last year.

“While we are truly helping families with young children across the state, the powers that be limited us last session in only providing this relief for infant diapers for one year. Now, Rep. Eskamani and I are continuing to fight for a permanent exemption on all diapers—including adult incontinence products—because working families shouldn’t be taxed on essential health care items,” Book, who’s a mother of twins, said in a statement.
The Florida Essential Needs Coalition is asking parents in the state to call elected officials to support Book and Eskamani’s proposals when the legislative session begins in March.
