Puerto Rican artist Nora Maité Nieves lights up Times Square

The project makes Nieves the first interdisciplinary visual artist from Puerto Rico to exhibit her art as part of the #MidnightMoment initiative.

The vibrant hues and intricate designs of Puerto Rican artist Nora Maité Nieves will illuminate Times Square screens every day at midnight throughout February.

Nieves’ captivating video, titled “Eyes of the Sea/Ojos del Mar,” invites viewers on a colorful odyssey, blending symbols, textures, and ornamental elements that reflect her Caribbean heritage.

The project makes Nieves the first interdisciplinary visual artist from Puerto Rico to exhibit her art as part of the #MidnightMoment initiative. The initiative simultaneously projects artists’ works on more than 95 monitors of the iconic Times Square every midnight of each month.

This initiative is a collaboration between the Times Square Arts program and the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Nieves’ work is part of her exhibition, “Clouds in the Expanded Field/Nubes en el Paisaje Expandido.” It will be available to view through July 7, 2024, at the Norton Museum in Florida.

In another “first” for Nieves, she’s also the first Puerto Rican artist to have an individual exhibition in the Norton Museum’s galleries.
