@floricuas Speaking before the Senate Committee on Ethics and Elections on Monday, Florida Democratic Senator Tina Polsky offered strong arguments against the confirmation of Moms for Liberty co-founder Tina Descovich to the Florida Commission on Ethics. Descovich, a member of the Brevard County School Board from 2016 to 2020, was appointed to the seat by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Incorporated in Florida in January of 2021, Moms for Liberty combats what they consider the so-called ‘woke indoctrination’ of children by “advocating for book bans in school libraries and endorsing candidates for public office that align with the group’s views,” according to a report from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). “They also use their multiple social media platforms to target teachers and school officials, advocate for the abolition of the [U.S.] Department of Education, advance conspiracy propaganda, and spread hateful imagery and rhetoric against the LGBTQ community,” the report says. Sen. Polsky questioned Descovich’s ability to disentangle from what she called her “very public personal biases,” adding that “we need people who are completely above the political fray.” Despite Polsky’s arguments, Descovich was confirmed by the Republican-majority committee. The proposal must now go before the Senate. 🖊️: @gcbalido 📸: N/A
