If there’s been too much doom and gloom in your social feeds, make sure to follow these Puerto Rican comedy influencers. You’ll thank us later.
Humor holds a special place in Puerto Rican culture. It serves as a way to release stress and navigate life’s challenges, while strengthening a sense of cultural identity, which is especially important to Boricuas in the diaspora.
During uncertain times like these, a good laugh is more important than ever. Fortunately, there are countless incredibly funny Boricuas that you can follow on social media to catch a good laugh whenever and wherever you are. Several of these talented Puerto Ricans are professional comedians who share their comedy on social media, while others got their start on Instagram or TikTok, and are now performing on stage.
Here are six Puerto Rican comedy influencers that will lighten up your feed and day.
Maritere Castellanos Esteve (@madres.en.cuarentena)
As her handle suggests, Maritere Castellanos Esteve started her Instagram page during the pandemic, bringing humor to her mom friends while in quarantine. The half Puerto Rican, half Cuban mother of three is known for depicting hilarious and all-too-familiar scenes from raising children as a Latina mom in Florida. She’s also loved for her on-point imitations of accents from different Spanish-speaking countries.
Although her page started during the pandemic, Castellanos’ interest in acting goes way back. As a child in Puerto Rico, she appeared in TV commercials, participated in school talent competitions, took acting classes in college, and was even admitted to Televisa’s acting school in Miami, Florida. However, at that time, she had just gotten married and decided to dedicate her time to her family.
Now, she has 1.4 million followers on Instagram, 163 thousand on TikTok, and 299 thousand on Facebook, and she’s also recently started to perform stand-up comedy.
“I always had the desire to act, but I dedicated myself to the role of being a mother, which I’m so passionate about. Who would’ve thought that sharing this role would lead me to fulfill this dream I’ve had since childhood,” she told Primera Hora.
Kel Perez (@iamkelperez)
Orlando-based Kel Perez started on social media with skits that portrayed relatable scenes and characters from Puerto Rican culture—from the chancleta-throwing mamá in a house dress to Bad Bunny fans decked out in tropical shirts and extra short shorts. His videos are so relatable that he has connected not only with Boricuas but Latinos in general, earning him features on major networks like Telemundo and Univision. With over 511 thousand followers on Instagram, 494 thousand on TikTok, and 260 thousand on Facebook, he’s now taking his talent onto the stage and quickly becoming a favorite on the comedy circuit.
Franco Micheo (@francomicheo)
From performing silly stunts and trying unique foods (iguana empanadas, anyone?) to podcasts and participating on Wapa Televisión’s “Super Chef Celebrities,” Franco Micheo is one of those brilliant and versatile content creators, who is hard to pin down. The influencer currently has 232 thousand follower on Instagram and 473 thousand on TikTok, as well as a podcast called La Comuna.
He recently made news when his relationship with actress and singer Jearnest Corchado, who regularly accompanied him on his adventures, ended this past year.
Gaby Alicea (@gabyaliceaoficial)
This Caguas native got his first opportunity to perform in a comedy sketch at a theater at the age of 25, and hasn’t stopped acting since. Now, the comedian, actor, and musician has over 265 thousand followers on Instagram, 322 thousand on Facebook, and 183 thousand on TikTok. When he’s not creating content for social media, he’s performing around the US the Puerto Rico in plays, stand-up comedy shows, and movies. His most recent stand-up show is called “El Boricua es otra cosa”.
Alicea prides himself on creating “clean comedy” that the whole family can enjoy. Among his most popular characters are Don Sefe, Boricuita, and Mami.
Josue “Comedy” Torres (@josuecomedy)
Josué Torres started his career in theater at the age of 14, when he joined a prominent theater company in Ohio, where his love for theater and the arts truly blossomed.
From there, the young actor, and musician appeared in several shows on WAPA TV, on the radio station Nueva Vida, and has written and produced numerous plays. Since 2013, Josué Torres has been the president of Proyectos J.T., a company dedicated to producing family-oriented theatrical events with a focus on social awareness. His most recent show, “Mi Suegra No Me Deja,” has been performed more than 50 times both in and outside Puerto Rico.
Today he shares his unique brand of humor on social media, where he has 403 thousand followers on Instagram, 195 thousand on TikTok and 570 thousand on Facebook.
