More than 450,000 of 1.4 million customers remained in the dark more than a day after Ernesto swiped past Puerto Rico late Tuesday as a tropical storm before strengthening into a hurricane.
Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Pierluisi announced late Tuesday that US President Joe Biden had approved his request to use emergency FEMA funds as a result of the tropical storm.
It is expected that the rain will begin by late Monday. Rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches will be widespread, with up to 10 inches in parts of the island.
According to a recent projected trajectory, the closest approach of the center would be 241 miles to the southwest of Cabo Rojo.
Forecasters have predicted a very busy hurricane season, with 20 to 25 named storms.
The executive order also authorizes the activation of the National Guard to assist in relief efforts. The Guard will be tasked with providing support to local authorities in rescue operations, damage assessment, and debris removal.
AccuWeather forecasters expect between 20 and 25 named storms in the Atlantic this season. Of those storms, eight to 12 are expected to become hurricanes (74 mph winds or greater), with four to seven reaching Category 3 or higher (at least 111 mph).
