She’s Had Enough. Kamala Harris Blasts Trump for Abuse of Power in Georgia Call.

Kamala Harris offered her first public commentary on the taped call released by The Washington Post, calling Trump’s performance “a bold abuse of power by the president of the United States.”

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris blasted President Donald Trump for allegedly pressuring Georgia’s secretary of state to “find 11,780 votes,” in yet another attempt to overturn his electoral defeat to President-elect Joe Biden.

Harris visited Georgia Sunday to rally in support of Democratic challengers Jon Ossoff and the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who are in tight races with Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, respectively, for the state’s vacant Senate seats. 

The runoff elections, scheduled for Jan. 5, will decide control of the US Senate. Democrats must win both seats to secure a majority in the Senate, which would allow Biden-Harris to start their administration with a unified government.

Addressing a Garden City crowd at a drive-thru rally in Savannah, Georgia, Harris offered her first public commentary on the taped call released by The Washington Post, calling Trump’s performance “[a] voice of desperation.”

In the pleading hour-long call, Trump can be heard telling Brad Raffensperger that “there’s nothing wrong with saying, you know, um, that you’ve recalculated,” at times suggesting that not doing so could bring dire consequences.

This, Harris told the crowd, constitutes “a bald, bald-faced, bold abuse of power by the president of the United States.”

She then went on to lambast Trump and Republicans for calling the runoffs in Georgia “illegal and invalid.” 

“The current President of the United States called the senate race in Georgia, this senate race in Georgia…illegal and invalid… suggesting that the people of Georgia are trying to commit a crime,” she said. 

Failed Attempts to Overthrow Democracy

Harris also called out Trump for his continued, unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud, and for filing lawsuits seeking to overturn the election results. 

“Look at the most recent history, which is that after… you turned Georgia blue, you elected Joe Biden president of the United States, you elected the first black woman in the history of our country to be the vice president of the United States, and they have the gall to suggest you didn’t know what you were doing, you must have gone about it in a way that was illegitimate,” she said.

The incoming vice-president then went on to recount the six lawsuits filed by Republicans in an attempt to challenge the results of the election. Still “they failed every time,” Harris pointed out, adding that “the people’s voice remains standing.”

Whether Trump Likes It or Not

These remarks came after Harris spoke about the importance of the Senate while on Instagram Live with actor and musician Janelle Monáe. Harris then stated that she would be sworn in as Vice President on Jan. 20 “whether Donald Trump likes that or not.”

However, for her it comes as a bittersweet reminder that “when I am sworn in… there will be no more Black woman in the United States Senate.”

Harris’ remarks were the first on-camera reaction from the incoming administration to the call. Bob Bauer, a senior adviser to President-elect Joe Biden, said in an earlier statement that Trump’s bombshell call, “captures the whole, disgraceful story about Donald Trump’s assault on American democracy.”
