AOC Says Sen. Cruz Must Resign For His Actions In Fueling Capitol Hill Mob

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told Sen. Ted Cruz he must resign for fueling the riots in DC and for fundraising during the chaos.

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is attempting to distance himself from his involvement in the Jan. 6 riots at Capitol Hill by condemning the actions of right-wing pro-Trump terrorists. However, his fellow Congress members aren’t letting him get off that easily. 

Several lawmakers, including Texas Rep. Joaquín Castro, North Carolina Rep. Sen. Mujtaba Mohammed, Delaware Sen. Chris Coons, and Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono, have publicly demanded the resignation of Sen. Cruz. However, it is the resignation callout by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that is making Sen. Cruz very angry.

On Jan. 7, a day after the riots in DC, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez told Sen. Cruz that he should be held responsible for not only spreading lies about the 2020 presidential election results but for invoking supporters of President Donald Trump to fight against President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. She also said he should be removed from office for sending out fundraising texts and email messages to his supporters during the middle of the riot. 

“Sen. Cruz, you must accept responsibility for how your craven, self-serving actions contributed to the deaths of four people yesterday,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “And how you fundraised off this riot. Both you and Senator Hawley must resign. If you do not, the Senate should move for your expulsion.”

Sen. Cruz responded to Rep. Ocasio-Cortez by calling her a liar. 

He tweeted, “Leading a debate in the Senate on ensuring election integrity is doing our jobs, and it’s in no way responsible for the despicable terrorists who attacked the Capitol yesterday. And sorry, I ain’t going anywhere. When you and your socialist buddies try to massively raise taxes, when you try to pass the green new deal & destroy millions of jobs, when you push for amnesty, when you try to pack the Supreme Court w/ activists to undermine our Constitutional rights… I will fight that every step & stand with the People.”

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez didn’t let Sen. Cruz off the hook for trying to walk back from his actions on Jan. 6. She responded by tweeting a screenshot of his fundraising efforts. 

“Oh —you’re accusing me of lying? Isn’t this you?” she asked. “Your campaign sent out this fundraising message as people were sieging the Capitol. You claimed to be ‘leading the fight to reject electors.’ Clashes started around 1:20 pm. This message was sent after the Capitol was breached.”

She then added, “Your complete refusal to acknowledge any of the above harm, wrongdoing, or even misjudgment; & your lack of any self-reflection in how these acts contributed to yesterday’s chaos is alarming. It is unbecoming of any elected official and makes you unfit for the office you occupy. Resign.”

When news broke that the police officer who was injured during the riots had passed away, Sen. Cruz angered people after tweeting his condolences to the family of the fallen officer.

“Heidi and I are lifting up in prayer the family of the US Capitol Police officer who tragically lost his life keeping us safe,” Sen. Cruz tweeted. “He was a true hero. Yesterday’s terrorist attack was a horrific assault on our democracy. Every terrorist needs to be fully prosecuted.”
