@floricuas Former President Donald Trump has effectively killed a new bipartisan effort to reform the US immigration system and address issues at the Southern border. Congress has been negotiating for weeks on a deal, but Trump has pressured Republicans to oppose any agreement in order to avoid handing President Biden a any kind of victory and so that Trump can use it as a campaign issue in this year’s presidential election. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell admitted in a private meeting on Wednesday that Trump’s opposition toward the yet-to-be-released border deal may spell its doom. Punchbowl News reported that McConnell told Republican senators the politics “have changed” because Trump wants to build his reelection campaign around immigration. “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him,” McConnell reportedly said.
