The 60 full delegates and five Puerto Rican Democratic alternates participating in the DNC decided to support Harris unanimously.

Charlie Rodríguez, president of the Democratic Party in Puerto Rico, praised the human qualities of President Joe Biden following his decision on Sunday to withdraw from the upcoming presidential election.

“After evaluating the situation in his political career, he chose to withdraw from the presidential nomination in order to give the Democratic Party the opportunity to defeat someone who represents a threat to the nation, and I add to the world…Donald Trump,” Rodríguez told Floricua.

Biden, 81, has faced questions about his age, and those concerns boiled over after last month’s first presidential debate, in which he struggled to articulate his thoughts and had several verbal miscues.

Rodríguez said that his performance as president had not been in discussion, since Biden’s public policy as president was never questioned. Now, the important thing is that the work he started continues.

In this regard, Rodríguez said Vice President Kamala Harris will continue the work Biden began on the island.

“Kamala also has a commitment to Puerto Rico and has been a great friend to Puerto Rico. She was recently on the island, I was able to share with her in a meeting with several members of the Democratic leadership, where she was very eloquent and where she outlined the important points of what the Biden-Harris administration has developed in these four years and the aid that have given Puerto Rico,” Rodríguez said.

The president of the Democratic Party highlighted that a US president had never before allocated as much money for Puerto Rico as President Biden.

Since he arrived at the White House in January 2021, the president took action on issues that impacted the Puerto Rican population.

One of the first steps he took was to unlock millions in funds for the reconstruction of Puerto Rico, after Hurricane Maria’s destruction, which President Donald Trump had withheld and imposed conditions on.

Biden also extended federal plans on the island such as the Child Tax Credit, the American Rescue Plan (ARP), the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

“He has given us parity in all federal programs, where administratively he could do it. And those that required legislation such as the extension of Supplemental Social Security (SSI) to Puerto Rico, he did it through legislation, and unfortunately, the Republicans in the chamber, who have a majority, were not willing to accept that proposal from the president. Hence, we have not been able to extend by law the extension of a program that is so important for Puerto Rico,” he said.

On Wednesday, the 60 full delegates and five Puerto Rican Democratic alternates participating in the DNC decided that they will unanimously support Harris.

“We carried out a participatory process, with broad openness and discussion, where everyone could express their opinion. From the beginning, the mood of support was in favor of Kamala and this was ratified in full,” confirmed Rodríguez, who is the former senatorial president of the island.

In addition to being one of the two largest delegations that will participate in the convention, the Puerto Rican delegation is made up of members of the two main parties on the island. Forty-nine are statehood supporters from the New Progressive Party (PNP) and 16 from the Popular Democratic Party, which supports the continuity of the Commonwealth.

The Puerto Rican delegation made itself available to spread the “Harris for President” campaign in Hispanic communities in the United States, particularly in states where there is a large Puerto Rican population.

“Kamala offers many guarantees to ensure victory against Donald Trump. She immediately aroused great enthusiasm, she received economic support and her position as vice president offers the continuity of a programmatic vision that has been one of prosperity for everyone, including, without a doubt, the American citizens of our Island,” Rodríguez commented.

Rodríguez will lead the Puerto Rican delegation at the National Democratic Convention, which will be held from Aug. 19 to 22 in Chicago.
